Parasite protection & vaccinations for pets

The best way to protect your pet’s long-term wellbeing is to prevent problems before they start. At STAR Vets, our preventative care focuses on two essentials: parasite protection and routine vaccinations, supported by regular health checks and tailored veterinary advice.

Parasite protection: fleas, worms and ticks

Parasites can affect pets all year round. They don’t just cause discomfort — some can spread disease and pose risks to people and other pets. A consistent, preventative plan is far more effective than waiting for symptoms to appear.

Why prevention matters

  • Fleas can multiply quickly and trigger itching, skin irritation and, in severe cases, anaemia.
  • Worms are often picked up when pets swallow infected fleas while grooming.
  • Lungworm in dogs can be serious and may be encountered around slugs, snails and damp areas.
  • Ticks are common in grassy areas and should be removed correctly with a tick tool.

Spotting a problem early

Signs such as scratching, irritated skin, weight loss, digestive upset or lethargy may indicate a parasite issue. However, prevention through the correct combination of flea, worm and tick treatments tailored to your pet is the most reliable way to keep them protected.

Vaccinations and annual boosters

Vaccination is a vital part of preventative healthcare. Vaccines protect pets from highly infectious and potentially fatal diseases while helping to safeguard the wider pet population.

What vaccinations protect against

Dogs can be vaccinated against parvovirus, distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parainfluenza and kennel cough.

Cats can be protected from cat flu viruses, infectious enteritis and feline leukaemia.

Rabbits are vaccinated against myxomatosis and both strains of viral haemorrhagic disease.

Why annual boosters are important

Vaccinations typically protect pets for up to 12 months. Annual boosters help maintain immunity and ensure continued protection. Each vaccination appointment also includes a full nose-to-tail health check with a vet, allowing early detection of other health concerns.
